Digestive System

Injuries to your digestive system can have far-reaching effects and give rise to a personal injury compensation claim if the injury was not your fault. The digestive system is a core function of the body as it breaks down your daily intake of food, turning it into energy. The food is either absorbed, used or excreted and is vital for ongoing health.

Traumatic injury can cause the most serious damage to the digestive system and therefore can demand the highest levels of personal injury compensation, however even an injury that does not penetrate the body in the way a traumatic injury does can cause long-term damage. Physical strain or pressure (for instance from a seat belt in a car accident) can also lead to problems in digesting your food properly and cause problems in everyday life.

Severe cases of food poisoning can cause toxicosis which can cause serious damage to the digestive system and demand high levels of compensation. Symptoms can cause ongoing (but not permanent) vomiting, diarrhoea and fever which could need hospitalisation. Even less severe and more short-lived cases of food poisoning may cause temporary digestive damage that could be claimed for, as long as you can prove that you suffered the temporary damage through no fault of your own.
