Leg Amputations

Leg amputations are highly traumatic injuries that affect the person both psychologically and physically. The distressing fact is that in some instances of leg amputation, those in emergency situations, the amputation is carried out while the victim is conscious as it is a life-saving measure. There may have been a number of attempts to save the leg before it was amputated, significantly adding to the suffering and distress.

Instances such as these will result in higher levels of compensation, however all instances of leg amputations are distressing and when they arise from an accident that was not the victim's fault, there will be substantial compensation. Both the physical and mental distress at the time and in recovery and rehabilitation will also be a factor taken into consideration.

People who suffer leg amputations will often need ongoing care to adapt to their disability; some will be able to be fitted with a prosthetic limb and others will not, depending on the individual injury. Again, this will affect the levels awarded in personal injury compensation. Leg amputation compensation levels also vary depending on whereabouts on the leg the amputation occurs (above or below the knee). Pain levels and ongoing issues such as phantom limb pain may also increase the levels awarded.
