Loss of One Arm

Although arguably not as traumatic or life-changing as the loss of both arms resulting from an accident, the loss of one arm is of course hugely distressing, physically painful and psychologically scarring. If you have suffered the loss of one arm in an accident that was not your fault and you claim for personal injury compensation, then a number of factors will be taken into account when calculating the amount of compensation that will be awarded in a successful claim.

The first factor is whether the amputated arm is your dominant arm – the arm you write with. Compensation levels will be higher for right-handed people that lose their right hand and for left-handed people that lose their left hand, given that they will need to learn to write and carry out primary functions with their less dominant hand. Then it will depend on whereabouts the arm is amputated. Amputations at the shoulder or above the elbow tend to award higher amounts than those amputated below the elbow; however other factors are considered such as ongoing pain and life modification needed.

Just as for every personal injury claim, each one is different, so if you have lost one arm as a result of someone else’s negligence then contact us to discuss the specifics of your case.
