Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Just as for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is difficult to diagnose and therefore a commonly misunderstood condition. The primary feature is persistent burning pain; severe cases are hugely debilitating and can be hard to treat.
It is not known what causes Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, but certain triggers have been identified including fractures and some other injuries. Of course most people will suffer these types of injuries and not go on to develop Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy; why certain people are more susceptible than others in developing this condition after injury is still not known. Heart attacks and the more severe head injuries are also thought to be triggers, while some people develop Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy with seemingly no underlying cause at all.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy most commonly affects the hand, wrist, foot, ankle, or knee, while in some cases a whole limb can be affected. The affected area will be very painful to the touch and a general burning pain will be felt even without contact. Levels of pain do vary, but most cases of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy involve pain that is so bad that it stops them from leading a normal, pain-free life. Although it is difficult to diagnose, it can be treated and even the most severe of cases, when treated properly, should improve over a course of months. Treatments include physiotherapy and blocking the sympathetic nervous system through the administration of drugs via injection in the localised area.
